Prof. Dr. Katrin Kinzelbach ist seit September 2019 an der FAU Professorin für Internationale Politik der Menschenrechte und Ko-Direktorin des MA Human Rights. Außerhalb der FAU ist sie Gastprofessorin am King’s College London und als Projektmanagerin mit dem V-Dem Projekt an der Universität Göteborg assoziiert.

Kinzelbach interessiert sich dafür, wie unterschiedliche Akteure die Menschenrechte konstruieren, kodifizieren, umsetzen oder konterkarieren, dabei transnational interagieren sowie ihre Taktiken im Kontext der digitalen Transformation verändern. In diesem Zusammenhang beschäftigt sie sich seit vielen Jahren mit der Volksrepublik China. Ein weiterer Fokus gilt der empirischen Erfassung von Menschenrechtsverletzungen. Gemeinsam mit dem V-Dem Projekt hat sie den Academic Freedom Index konzipiert und realisiert. Kinzelbach ist Mitglied im Academic Freedom Committee der International Studies Association.

Vor ihrem Wechsel an die FAU war sie stellvertretende Direktorin vom Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin. Als Gastprofessorin an der Central European University in Budapest leitete sie über mehrere Jahre eine praxisorientierte Menschenrechtsklinik. Zuvor arbeitete sie als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Ludwig Boltzmann Institut für Menschenrechte in Wien, wo sie auch ihre Doktorarbeit über den EU-China-Menschenrechtsdialog schrieb. Diese Arbeit wurde 2011 von der Körber Stiftung mit dem dem Deutschen Studienpreis ausgezeichnet (1. Preis). Von 2001-2007 war sie als Referentin für das Entwicklungsprogramm der Vereinten Nationen in unterschiedlichen Ländern tätig.
